Abstraction/Drawing
Ann Kipling, David MacWilliam, John Scott
Curated by: Gary Pearson
In the Abstraction/Drawing exhibition at OR Gallery guest curator Gary Pearson presents the intriguing arrangement of drawings by the artists Ann Kipling, David MacWilliam, and John Scott from April 1-25; the opening will take place on Tuesday, March 31, at 8pm.
Abstraction, as Pearson argues in the accompanying catalogue essay, has been the basis of mark-making for centuries, but has once again become a current topic these days. The response of each of these artists to the issue of abstraction varies widely, but the strength of this grouping highlights their “individual” responses.
Ann Kipling, a BC artist, employs delicate kinetic lines in her portraits which belie a coded abstract of her sitters. David MacWilliam, also a BC artist, investigates formal and conceptual issues in his abstract drawings. John Scott, a Toronto artist, uses loose black line to outline a narrative sequence composed in the imagination. Drawing and Abstraction shows a very enjoyable glimpse, through the works of these artists, at contemporary mark-making.
