Or Gallery is seeking applicants for a temporary Fall employment opportunity as a Programs and Outreach Assistant from late August to mid-December. This position requires 20 hours of work per week.

 

The Programs and Outreach Assistant will provide key support to Or Gallery staff in the development and delivery of the gallery’s public programming; this includes working with a team of curators, administrators and technicians to coordinate public outreach projects, youth and community programs, tours and activations of the exhibition on view. The incumbent will develop a comprehensive understanding of gallery community engagement.

THE CANDIDATE

The Programs and Outreach Assistant role is suited for art history, visual arts, museum studies, collections management, curatorial practice or equivalent post-secondary students, wishing to gain professional experience and further develop their careers and capabilities in an artist-run-centre context. A student may be eligible for employment if they: are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible); are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number); are under 30 years of age at the start of employment; and are currently a college or university student. Priority will be given to students who have not previously participated in the YCWHO employment program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with public events, workshops and receptions.
  • Assist with outreach strategies that prioritize engagement with the diverse communities directly surrounding the gallery.
  • Assist with developing and facilitating accessible public programs.
  • Assist with programs promotion and documentation.
  • Assist with exhibition interpretation for gallery audiences.
  • Support day-to-day operations of the gallery.
  • Engage with onsite gallery visitors.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Student of a Visual Art, Art History, Curatorial Practice (or equivalent) degree or diploma from a college or university.
  • Computer skills required: proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, social media platforms, Adobe Creative Suite, typing and researching skills. Proficiency with WordPress and Mailchimp is an asset but not mandatory.
  • Intermediate English is required, while other languages are considered an asset.
  • Good knowledge of contemporary art and Canadian artist-run centres.
  • Good oral and written communication skills and ability to write critically.
  • Ability to multitask autonomously as well as within a team setting.
  • Availability to work various times of the week, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Self-driven with good time management skills to balance self-directed time as well as a regular schedule as per gallery hours.
  • Experience working with the local community in the area immediately surrounding the Or Gallery, in Chinatown, Strathcona, the Downtown East Side, False Creek Flats, is considered an asset.

 

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
  • Must be between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and a college or university student.

Note: Priority will be given to students who have not previously participated in the YCWHO employment program.
